The GCC countries face many challenges that threaten sustainability, the most important of which is water scarcity, which is directly related to water security, energy security, and food security. Due to the high cost of water desalination, in addition to the depletion of groundwater and its lack of continuous recharge, in addition to its salinization, it has become necessary to find another water resource alternative that reduces the burden on natural water resources in addition to achieving sustainability by exploiting treated wastewater and utilizing this important resource for several uses.
Water is directly linked to the production of energy and food and vise versa, and sustainable practices in all of these aspects contribute to ensuring security in each of them. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the WEF Nexus and understand theses relationships and learn about the links with achieving sustainability in the GCC countries. This study will also present a case study on feasibility of biofuel production sewage sludge from WWTP and biodegradable waste using anaerobic digestion as an example of sustainable and circular solutions.
